Drive By

Trying to take pictures from a moving car is a nightmare. Jumping from side to side, camera at the ready, pointing it this way and that like the boom of a yacht swinging madly in the wind. Glimpses of perfect photo opportunities that are gone in the blink of an eye. “Can we stop?” Too late, the moment’s lost. That stunning view is now obscured by trees. The old guy with a face full or character has gone. And even if he was still there, is it acceptable to screech to a halt, leap out and shove a camera in the dude’s face before taking off again 5 seconds later? (No, it is not). The only approach is on foot – gently and tactfully. Case in point, I recently spent two days driving around the northern highlands of Sulawesi trying to shoot a landscape. I got a few, but back in the city of Makassar strolling around the fishermen’s quarter I snapped off more pictures in an hour than I got in two days on the road. This shot is one of my favourites from that day – two cute kids just hanging out. If I’d been in the car I would’ve missed it…
